Steps Toward Progress
While we are working to supply the children with access to vital resources, educated teachers and an improved quality of life, we also plan to implement impactful, sustainable projects. These projects are the most effective and drastic causes for change in the Hohoe community. These projects are desperately in need of support by way of monetary donations. You can donate to a specific project or give a general donation so that we can allocate your donation based on the current need.
Current and Upcoming Projects
The Internet Cafe (click to view this project's page)
The majority of children in Ghana do not have access to computers or Internet. As we all know, the Internet can serve as a vital educational resource and source of income. We plan to open an Internet cafe in July 2012 to establish a consistent, large income base that the orphanage can use to invest in their further development.
Girls Empowerment & Sewing Project (click to view this project's page)
We are excited to announce our partnership with Della, a fair trade fashion company, who will be sending one of their seamstresses to come to the Orphanage weekly so that the girls will receive invaluable sewing skills training. Using Della's donated scrap fabric, the girls will craft their own dresses and sell extra product in the market for a sustainable income. This project currently needs funds to buy the sewing machines, needles, and thread. It will begin in July 2011.
The Food Program (click to view this project's page)
The basis for a healthy, successful life is a healthy diet. We are working with local community members so that the children at Happy Kids will receive three nutritious, adequate meals on a daily basis. Children that go to school hungry are unable to focus on anything other than the rumbling in their bellies. We wish to change this by establishing an organized food schedule and budget. This project is in its planning stages and will begin in July 2011. Funds are needed to buy the food necessary to children's survival.
Successfully Completed Projects
The Dormitory Project (click to view this project's page)
Thanks to the generous donations of many individuals, between June 2010-August 2010 a large, two-roomed dormitory building was constructed so that the children have a safe, clean and beautiful home. The children, who were used to sleeping on a cement floor huddled together, now each have their own bed and sleep under ventilated ceiling fans (which reduce the risk of malaria). The building has electricity throughout and a large porch where the children play and study. This project only took 2 months to complete and has revolutionized the way the children live.
The Classroom Project (click to view this project's page)
We are currently working on the construction of three large classrooms at the Happy Kids school site. This will drastically change the educational capacity of the school and the children's ability to learn. The construction began last year and will resume in July 2011.
